What is Functional Nutrition?

Functional Nutrition is about finding the right way for each of us as individuals to eat—using food to maximize the potential for health and reverse dysfunction or disease. There is no single “right diet” that applies to all of us.

We have different genetic backgrounds, different preferences, and different lives. We all want to be healthy, but most of us haven’t figured out just how to make food and dietary patterns serve that goal. Functional Nutrition offers the concepts, strategies, and tools to make that happen!

Why do we need Functional Nutrition?

Wellness is a continuum.  Clients don’t just show up one day with a ‘modern chronic disease’.  There have been long term lifestyle imbalances that have contributed to the current health experience.

For centuries, humans have relied on whole food as a source of energy, health, and connection.

However, in the last six or seven decades, changes in the food chain (and in how we use it) have contributed strongly to the growing epidemic of chronic disease. Functional Nutrition developed out of a desire on the part of healthcare providers to change that picture.

Evidenced based research is demonstrating that whole food is a powerful influence on our health.

Whole foods offers not only the calories that fuel our body’s metabolism (engine), but it also contains many diverse macro and micro nutrients that play important roles in optimising cell renewal and whole body vitality. Poor-quality food leads to systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity.  High-quality, whole foods, in a balanced diet can reverse disease and sustain health. In a very real sense, food is medicine!

Food is actually information, not just energy (calories).

Can a Nutritionist work together with my doctor?
Yes. Functional Nutritionists are happy to collaborate and communicate with your doctor to come up with healthy and natural ways to improve your health.  The Nutritionist will take a full medical history from you – including any medications currently prescribed by your Dr and the most recent pathology result.   If the nutritionist recommends supplements they will check the possibility of interactions with medications and liaise with your Dr, for your safety.

Can I claim health fund rebates with Nutrition?
Yes, but this depends on your health fund and the extent of your policy coverage. You can ask Linda or check with your health fund prior to a consultation.
