Supporting Shoulder Recovery: How Acupuncture Can Help a Torn Rotator Cuff

Rotator cuff tears are a common shoulder injury, often affecting people who engage in repetitive arm movements—whether through sport, work, or everyday activities. This group of muscles and tendons plays a vital role in stabilising the shoulder joint, and when damaged through overuse, trauma, or age-related wear and tear, it can significantly impact comfort and mobility.

People involved in activities such as swimming, tennis, weightlifting, or occupations that require frequent overhead motion are particularly susceptible. A sudden fall or direct impact can also cause an acute tear.

Identifying signs - where to begin

Common signs of a rotator cuff tear include ongoing shoulder pain, weakness, limited range of motion, and difficulty with tasks like reaching, lifting, or dressing. In some cases, a clicking or catching sensation may also be present.

It's best to approach your GP first for a proper diagnosis. Acupuncture then can offer useful strategies to support recovery from rotator cuff injuries. Following up with your Physiotherapist for rehabilitation exercises will bring about a more full healing in building up strength.  When used alongside physical therapy and appropriate exercise, acupuncture may enhance recovery outcomes and support a smoother rehabilitation process.

How Acupuncture approaches a Rotator cuff tear

Traditional Acupuncture has several strategies for pain relief that goes beyond what Dry needling can provide. You can read more about the differences between Acupuncture and Dry needling here. Research suggests that acupuncture can help by reducing inflammation, encouraging local circulation, and easing muscular tension—all of which support the body’s natural healing response.

By targeting specific points around the shoulder, such as LI15 (Jianyu), SI9 (Jianzhen), and GB21 (Jianjing), acupuncture may relieve pain, promote relaxation of tight muscles, and improve range of motion. For many people, it can also be a helpful way to manage pain without relying solely on medication.

  • Emerging research backs this integrative approach. A systematic review published in the Journal of Acupuncture and Meridian Studies reported that acupuncture may improve pain and function in those with rotator cuff injuries.
  • Another study in the World Journal of Clinical Cases found that electroacupuncture, when combined with rehabilitation, significantly improved shoulder mobility and quality of life.

If you're recovering from a rotator cuff injury, speak with your doctor about incorporating acupuncture into your treatment plan. When guided by an experienced and AHPRA registered Acupuncturist, it can be a supportive, drug-free option to help you return to comfortable movement and regain confidence in your shoulder again.
