Acupuncture for a Sprained Ankle: A Natural Approach to Recovery.

Acupuncture for a Sprained Ankle: A Natural Approach to Recovery

A sprained ankle is one of the most common injuries, occurring when the ligaments that support the ankle are stretched or torn.

This can happen during various activities, such as running, playing sports like basketball or soccer, hiking on uneven terrain, or even misstepping on a curb.

While rest, ice, compression, elevation and refer (RICER) are standard treatments, the R for refer means acupuncture is a helpful therapy in addition to physiotherapy for reducing pain, swelling, and recovery time.

How Acupuncture Helps a Sprained Ankle

  1. Reduces Inflammation and Pain – Acupuncture stimulates blood flow and promotes the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers. Studies suggest that acupuncture can significantly reduce swelling and inflammation, expediting the healing process.
  2. Enhances Circulation and Tissue Repair – By improving microcirculation around the injured area, acupuncture helps deliver oxygen and nutrients essential for tissue repair. This can be particularly beneficial in reducing stiffness and improving mobility post-injury.
  3. Balances the Nervous System – Acupuncture regulates pain signals by modulating nerve responses. This not only provides relief but also reduces muscle tension and prevents secondary injuries caused by compensatory movements.

Scientific Evidence Supporting Acupuncture

Research published in the Journal of Acupuncture and Meridian Studies (2017) found that acupuncture effectively reduced pain and improved function in patients with ankle sprains compared to conventional treatments alone. Another study in Pain Medicine (2018) highlighted acupuncture’s role in accelerating soft tissue healing and reducing inflammation.

When to Consider Acupuncture

If you’ve recently suffered an ankle sprain, incorporating acupuncture into your recovery plan within the first few days can help reduce pain and inflammation. Regular sessions can also prevent chronic stiffness and promote full recovery, making it an excellent option for athletes or individuals prone to ankle injuries.

A short course of acupuncture is 3-5 treatments weekly or if you're in significant pain twice per week. After this initial phase swelling and reduction in pain should have happened. I have over 20 years experience working with patients and their sports injuries.

I'm a degree-qualified acupuncturist here on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. You can make an appointment here online to start the journey to recovery.
